Homeless man arrested in connection with burglary spree in Rochester

ROCHESTER, Minn. - Police say a homeless man was jailed after an incident Wednesday afternoon.

The Rochester Police Department says around 4 pm, officers located a suspect in property damage and burglary incidents reported earlier in the day. Police say when they approached the suspect outside a vacant building in the 1200 block of Broadway Avenue S, the suspect ran inside the building.

Law enforcement surrounded the building and used a drone to locate the suspect on the roof. Rochester police say Andrew Jones, 39 and homeless, came down from the roof and exited the building peacefully.

Jones was booked into the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center for first-degree damage to property and third-degree burglary.

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KIMT) - The Rochester Police Department (RPD) says at least one male is in custody, accused of possible vandalism near the former Friedell Middle School and former Denny's building off Broadway Ave. Wednesday afternoon.

Rochester Police Capt. Aaron Penning says the man in custody is an adult, not a juvenile as first reported by police. Officers believe the man arrested is connected with a string of other crimes that happened Wednesday.

The suspect allegedly vandalized a couple of food trucks on Broadway Ave. The department says one was located on 9 1/2 St. and the other was a nearby Smash Burger truck.

Police believe he committed the felony-level burglary before ending up at a building between the old Denny's location and RAIL.

Police received reports of several male suspects potentially committing acts of vandalism at the school just after 4 p.m. As of 5:40 p.m. the scene is wrapping up.

Capt. Aaron Penning said drones could be seen in the air because a possible suspect was on the roof of the school.

At this time RPD could only detail one person is in custody, though they added there is potential for more to be arrested.

What was Friedell Middle School is now Rochester Academy for Independent Living and is located right off Broadway Ave. and Hwy. 14.

Officers plan to book the man arrested into the Olmsted County Detention Center tonight.
