Glenn Close has had one of the most illustrious and prolonged on-screen careers in Hollywood history -- but when it comes to her life away from the cameras, the 77-year-old legend eschews the bright lights of Los Angeles in favor of a quiet and "modest" life in Montana.
Close moved to Bozeman full time in 2019, but she has owned properties in the area on and off since the '80s -- years before the area became a mecca for A-listers seeking a rustic retreat from their megamansions in L.A. However, while the "Fatal Attraction" star is currently residing in what she describes as a "modest, 1892 brick house," she has now revealed that she's building a custom "sanctuary" in the area.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Close opened up about the many homes she has lived in throughout her life, but noted that her home for many years has been in the Montana enclave, where she lives with "all of my siblings."
The community in which the actress lives could not be further from the ritzy mansions that many associate with stars of her status.
"Today my home is in Bozeman," she shared. "All of my siblings live here. My modest, 1892 house has a porch where I can see the mountains and say hi to neighbors."
Though she seems perfectly happy with that property, Close explained that she's building a new property, a "Zen farmhouse" that she hopes will serve as a "sanctuary" for her family.
"I'm building a larger house about a half-hour outside of town," she shared. "It's going to be my Zen farmhouse and our family sanctuary. In back will be a stone cottage, reminding me of the best years of my childhood."
According to property records, Close purchased her three-bedroom, three-bathroom abode via a trust in 2016 for an undisclosed sum. The actress revealed in a 2021 interview with Mountain Outlaw that she bought the dwelling to be closer to her sisters, Jessie, who lives next door, and Tina, who lives nearby. Her brother Alex also has a home in the area.
Creating a long-lasting home base for her family has been a dream for the star, who told the outlet that she wanted to build a "legacy" that she could leave to her daughter, whom she shares with former partner John Starke, and her future grandchildren.
"When I was little, I got solace in nature and that has never changed," Close said. "I always tried to create that same potential for my family, especially now to come back here and be with my siblings and have a piece of land outside of town that will always be here for my daughter and her children. That's my legacy."
Close's daughter, Annie Starke, had the opportunity to share a piece of that legacy with the world in November 2023, when she debuted her cooking show, Magnolia Network's "The Mountain Kitchen," which was filmed on her mother's Bozeman ranch.
"My life now is all about ranching, mountain living, and creating delicious dishes, in and out of the kitchen, with a touch of wild and a little bit of fire," Starke told People magazine.
The publication reported that Close had purchased a plot of land "north of Bozeman between the Bridgers and the snaking course of the East Gallatin River," where she planned to plant the seeds of that legacy.
Though she purchased her Bozeman home in 2016, the actress made her residence in Montana official in 2019 when she listed a sprawling New York estate that she had owned for 30 years. The stunning Bedford Hills property was put on the market for $3.6 million. It was ultimately sold for $2.8 million the following year, by which point Close was quarantining in Bozeman during the COVID-19 pandemic, spending time with family as well as her beloved dog, Pippi.
"I take my cup that has a little bit of half-and-half and sweetener in it, and I fill up my coffee over at [Jessie's] house," Close told Parade of her daily routine during that time. "And we just chat and laugh at the dogs, and that's pretty much the beginning of my day."
The actress joked that her daily uniform since moving to Bozeman was an oversized T-shirt and casual pants.
"Nobody dresses up in Bozeman," she noted. "I don't know what I'll do with the wardrobe that I brought out here that's in storage."
Close has not turned her back on Hollywood completely. She travels to Los Angeles to attend red-carpet events and film various projects that are currently in the works.
Most recently, she attended the 2025 Golden Globes, where she presented the award for Best Picture, causing quite a stir with her speech, which had to be censored when she uttered a curse word, according to the New York Post.
