A Thousand Oaks man was hospitalized with fire-related injuries after reportedly falling asleep while smoking late Friday afternoon, authorities said.
The man, said to be 92, apparently fell asleep while smoking a cigarette in his chair, said Ventura County Sheriff's Capt. Carl Patterson. The sheriff's office is contracted to provide police services in Thousand Oaks.
The cigarette lit the chair on fire, Patterson said, and the fire began to spread to the rest of the house.
The incident was reported as a residential fire around 4:30 p.m. Friday in the 1600 block of Chilco Court.
The man was initially taken to Los Robles Regional Medical Center for treatment of smoke inhalation, the captain said, but was later transported to the Grossman Burn Center in Los Angeles.
There was no update on his condition Saturday, he said.
