Elevated levels of lead found in some homes/buildings in Mineral Point

MINERAL POINT, Wis. -- Elevated levels of lead was found in some homes/buildings in Mineral Point according to a 2023 water quality monitoring conducted by Mineral Point Water Utility.

The City of Mineral Point said the elevated results were likely due to service laterals being present on the buildings that were tested.

A service lateral is apart of the water infrastructure that connects a private home or business to water infrastructure system. This would be the water pipe that leaves a private building and connects to the larger water system.

It is recommended that residents and business owners determine if they have a lead service lateral and plan to have it replaced as soon as possible. If you are unsure of the materials of your water service, please call the City of Mineral Point (608)987-2361.

Lead is a mineral that can build up in soft tissues and bones. Exposure to lead in drinking water can cause serious health effects in all age groups. Infants and children can have decreases in IQ and attention span.

Lead exposure can lead to new learning and behavior problems or worsen existing learning and behavior problems.

The children of women who are exposed to lead before or during pregnancy can have increased risk of adverse health effects. Adults can have increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney or nervous system problems.

Here's how to prevent lead in water.

Determine if you have a lead service lateral. If you do, plan to replace as soon as possible.Run your water to flush out the lead. Run water for 15-30 seconds to flush lead from interior plumbing or until it becomes cold or reaches a steady temperature for drinking or cooking. Use cold water for cooking and preparing baby formula.Do not boil water to remove lead. Look for alternative drinking water sources (bottled water). Residents may want to consider purchasing bottled water or a water filter. Test your water for lead.
