High school girls basketball: Black Raiders dominate early, cruise to win over CB TJ

For two quarters Tuesday night, the Sioux City East High School girl's basketball team held visiting Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson scoreless while tuning its young squad in the midst of a near 60-point win.

The Black Raiders outscored the Yellow Jackets 26-6 in the first quarter, poking balls free and scoring quick on the other end and did not allow another point until the fourth quarter which they headed into leading 63-6. Led by senior guard Kiki Demke with 17 points, 11 different players contributed in East's scoring efforts against CB TJ.

The Black Raiders took the final, 73-14, on its home court at East High School on Tuesday night in Missouri River Activities Conference play.

"It is good to see a lot of kids play in different roles," East head coach Brian Drent said. "We are a really inexperienced team so anytime we get a chance to get a lot of kids going I think it benefits us long term."

Six different girls found the bottom of the net from behind the arc, totaling eight 3-pointers for the Black Raiders, including a pair from juniors Jaylee Jackson and Korbyn Savary.

Jackson and Demke led East's aggressive defense that pressured the Yellow Jackets throughout the night. With a mix of picking up their defenders at halfcourt and constantly looking for steals, the pair got the Black Raider offense rolling early which led to their third straight win of the season.

"We got some good tips and steals and those two were at the top of where the action was and just kind of ran," Drent said. "We are a transitional offense type of team so to see those guys do a good job in that situation was fun to see."

Among East's six players that entered off the bench, Savary led the way with her pair of 3-pointers after entering the game with as many in four games. Drent was impressed with what Savary offered in relief of the starters, along with other depth players freshman Kennedy Reynolds and junior Amiyah Drew.

"Whether they come off the bench or they are starters I thought they gave us some good minutes," Drent said.

East improved to 4-1 on the year and picked up its third straight MRAC win after dropping its conference opener to Bishop Heelan. The Black Raiders next matchup will be on the road against Sergeant Bluff-Luton (2-3, 1-2).
