In a major push towards artificial intelligence (AI) and digital skilling, the Indian government has unveiled plans to set up data and AI labs in tier 2 and tier 3 cities. This initiative, under the IndiaAI mission, seeks to promote cutting-edge technological innovation and address the digital divide in smaller cities. Minister of State for Electronics and IT Jitin Prasada informed Parliament that 36 states and Union Territories (UTs) have been invited to nominate institutions for this ambitious project, with an additional 27 labs planned through a collaboration with the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT).
The government has issued invitations to all 36 states and UTs to nominate Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) or Polytechnics in tier 2 and tier 3 cities for the establishment of data and AI labs. These labs will serve as local hubs for AI research and development, equipping students with the necessary skills to thrive in the growing digital economy.
Additionally, IndiaAI in collaboration with NIELIT has committed to establishing 27 such labs nationwide. This collaboration aims to foster a skilled workforce and prepare smaller cities for the technological advancements reshaping industries globally.
As a pilot project, the government has already set up a model IndiaAI Data Lab at NIELIT in Delhi. This facility serves as a reference point for the design and infrastructure of future labs across tier 2 and tier 3 cities. The model lab highlights the potential of these centers in enabling access to advanced technology and training resources for students and professionals outside metropolitan areas.
To support innovation in the AI domain, the government is awarding IndiaAI fellowships annually to:
400 B-Tech students and 500 M-Tech students from engineering institutions recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
PhD scholars under the fellowship program in collaboration with the Top 50 National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)-ranked research institutes.
This initiative not only ensures access to advanced research opportunities but also fosters the next generation of AI experts.
Acknowledging the ethical challenges associated with AI, the government has prioritized the development of responsible AI frameworks. Eight key projects have been selected to establish robust guardrails for the ethical development, deployment, and adoption of AI technologies. These include:
Machine Unlearning from IIT Jodhpur.
Synthetic Data Generation from IIT Roorkee.
AI Bias Mitigation Strategy from NIT Raipur.
AI Ethical Certification Framework from IIIT Delhi and the Telecommunication Engineering Center (TEC).
These projects are designed to address concerns like data privacy, bias, and algorithm transparency, ensuring AI technologies remain trustworthy and inclusive.
