ERWIN, Tenn. (WSMV) - A suspect has died after a shooting involving an officer in East Tennessee, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI).
TBI said the incident occurred early Saturday morning, and preliminary investigation has shown that the shooting happened at around 2:30 a.m. at a residence in the 600 block of Maple Avenue in Erwin.
Erwin Police officers responded to the home for reports of a dog barking. TBI said when officers arrived on the scene, they reportedly heard a shotgun being racked before the door opened.
Officers reportedly commanded the suspect to put the gun down, but the situation escalated for reasons unknown at this time, resulting in at least two officers firing at the suspect.
TBI said the suspect was taken to a Johnson City hospital, where they later died. No officers were hurt in the incident.
At the request of the 1st Judicial District Attorney General Steven Finney, TBI agents are working to determine the series of events that led up to the shooting.
The deceased suspect is not being identified at this time.
