OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. - A 20-year-old man was arrested after a barricade situation on a Mississippi highway in Olive Branch on Saturday night, officials said.
James Moore was taken into custody and charged with several offenses, including drug possession and obstructing traffic, according to a spokesperson with the City of Olive Branch.
Officials said it all started just after 8 p.m. Saturday, when officers found a car stopped on Highway 302 at Craft Road.
"Due to the dark tint on the windows of the vehicle, officers found it difficult to see inside the vehicle," the city said in a statement. "Using a flashlight, an (Olive Branch Police) officer noticed slight movement from the driver, detected a strong odor of marijuana emanating from within the vehicle and saw a rifle on their lap."
Officials said the driver appeared to be asleep at the time.
Officers placed stop sticks underneath the car before they retreated to a safe place, the city said.
Officials said law enforcement shouted instructions for the driver to get out but did not get a response. A beanbag was then deployed, breaking the car's window before a drone flew into it, officials said.
This "startled the driver," who then drove to the parking lot of a nearby Walgreens, officials said.
There, Moore was taken into custody without incident.
He was also charged for having an open container of alcohol and tinted windows, officials said.
It was unknown when the barricade situation ended but a FOX13 crew arrived to the scene around 10 p.m. -- about two hours after it had started -- to find an active law enforcement scene. The DeSoto County Sheriff's Office also assisted in the investigation.
